Overview

What is a Regulator/Rectifier (AKA R/R)?

A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction. The process is known as rectification. [1]

A voltage regulator is designed to automatically maintain a constant voltage level. [2]

On the V-Strom, there is a regulator/rectifier unit that takes AC generated by the Stator, and then converts it into stable DC that feeds and charges the battery.

Known Issues

The OEM V-Strom R/R is known to be inefficient, as it works all the time, and therefore get rid of excessive energy as heat.
They also have voltage levels which are not stable, in particular when the motorcycle has idle RPM.
Excessive heating can sometimes cause the R/R unit to fail.

Solutions

MOSFET Regulator/Rectifier

MOSFET R/R are much more efficient, and therefore are run much cooler. They also provide a stable voltage output level across different RPMs. [3]
