Overview

GPS usage have become extremely wide spread as a a navigation tool in cars and motorcycles, due to their high accuracy, low price and features such as voice & voice directions.
Up to a few years ago, before the boom in smart phones, GPS has been used as specialized hardware units, dominated by a few players like Garmin & Tom Tom.
Most consumer GPS devices were designed for usage inside a car and were not water proof or shock resistant.
There were other models that were specifically designed for motorcycle usage and focused on the following features which are unique to motorcycles:
  1. Water/weather proofing
  2. Rugged and resilient to shocks
  3. User interfaces which were allowed easy control with gloves
  4. Could accept 12V straight from the battery, without a 12v->5V adapter as commonly used in cars

On top of GPS hardware devices, there has been in recent years a growing amount of GPS software applications that run on one of the smart phone platforms - in particular iPhones and Android.
Even though smart phones were not designed for motorcycle usage, and by and large do not meet the 4 criteria mentioned above, nearly every rider has them, and it is therefore tempting to use, due to the very low cost involved.
